菊蒿全草有毒，全草含菊蒿素(tanacetin)、菊蒿醇A、菊蒿醇B(tanacetol A，B)，揮發油中成分有側柏酮、葉含莢蒾醇、花含順式長蒎烷-2，7-二酮(cislongipinane-2，7-dione)。

 

可因誤食過量的菊蒿油和用菊蒿葉子當茶飲用而引起人中毒。

 

菊蒿中毒症狀為震顫、口吐白沫、強烈痙攣、擴瞳、脈搏頻數而微弱、呼吸困難，最後心臟麻痹而死亡。
